There’s an interesting obsession with nice cars and fashion in Ulaanbaatar. While in the countryside a sweet ride was your motorcycle and your nice clothing was a clean deel, in UB people love their fashion and slick cars. This seems a little odd from people who live in tiny apartments with no beds and step over garbage on the street. The cars are connected to the nomadic ideal of being able to move anywhere fast, which is why they have big serious cars like hummers. But they also have serious sports cars, replacing the need for a fast horse. I’m not really sure about the clothing, I’m sure its something about attempting to identity with a more powerful economically successful class. It reminds me of a post Myric put up a while ago about Sapeurs in Africa.
